TIGO SUPPORTS ONE AREA NETWORK INITIATIVE, ANNOUNCING NEW PRICING

Tigo has announced new lower SMS price points for international messaging within the Northern Corridor - Uganda, Kenya and South Sudan.  Customers will now be able to send SMS for almost half price.

The new prices will support the One Area Network initiative, part of the Northern Corridor Infrastructure Framework Agreement which was signed at the fifth Heads of State Summit for the regional Projects held in Nairobi in May 2014.

SMS

The cost of a text message (SMS) from Rwanda to Uganda, Kenya or South Sudan will be charged 45Rwf per event down from 75Rwf.

Voice

The Calling rates to Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan were earlier discounted to from 68, 60, and 60, down from 128, 256 and 245 respectively.

Chantal Umutoni Kagame - Deputy Chief Executive Officer - Tigo Rwanda commented:

“We welcome the decision from our Northern Corridor Heads of States summit; lowering our SMS tariffs gives our cusotmers the freedom to text more. The rates were revised to 45% less across the corridor, allowing those who favour SMS to communicate with their business partners, friends and family cost-effectively and to grow new ventures across the corridor.”

Sitting on the panel of the Kenya-Rwanda Business Forum held at the downtown Serena Kigali Hotel, Chantal Kagame emphasized the need for telecom operators to harmonize calling and texting rates across the region. Lowering the voice rates by 50% in the last quarter of 2014 encouraged a traffic growth of 30%, she mentioned.

Tigo recently launched a new slogan, Live it, Love it, as a result of an extensive project that seeks to reposition and streamline products for its fast changing customer base and give real value to its users.

Chantal Kagame added, “We ensure that Tigo users live and love their Tigo experience irrespective of where they are. Our compliance with the One Area Network initiative is a demonstration of our commitment to this promise.’
